Sleap Airfield
For those who are looking for a new destination for coffee of lunch, try Sleap Airfield, Shropshire, where the Eric Lock Lounge restaurant provides the ideal environment for R & R, as a well as providing a great menu.
Sleap (pronounced "Slape") is an ex- Royal Air Force airfield, which was opened in April 1943, and used by RAF advanced flying training units. Initially it was the base for No.81 Operational Training Unit RAF (81 OTU) within No. 93 Group RAF (93 Gp) of RAF Bomber Command equipped with Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber aircraft.
From 1 January 1944 Sleap was assigned to No.38 Group RAF(38 Gp). 81 OTU's Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley stowed Airspeed Horsaheavy troop-carrying gliders on training missions;the Horsas making practice formation landings at RAF Sleap to simulate attacks in enemy territory. Vickers Wellingtons replaced the Whitleys from November 1944 and by January 1945 the strength was 51 Wellington T.Xs, used to train Transport Command air-crew. The RAF finally released Sleap in 1964, butthe location is still used as a relief airfield by nearby RAF Shawbury for Juno and Jupiter aircraft from the DHFSas part of the UKMFTS
The Shropshire Aero Club members' bar (also a cafe open tothe public) at Sleap is named Eric Lock Lounge after Flight Lieutenant Eric Lock the World War II Battle of Britain pilot who was the highest scoring British-born pilot with sixteen and a half victories during the epic battle. There is also the Wartime Aircraft Recovery Group museum open at weekends.
Rexor In Aviation
Rexor has been involved in general airport contracting for many years. More recently, it has also taken an interest in the wider aspects of aviation eg. flight operations due to the involvement in the company of Captain Glen Molloy (ex military senior RAF officer and now airline captain) who is also the Rexor Flight Ops Director.
Consequently, Rexor has more recently been involved in a variety of aircraft specific tasks; eg. sourcing ‘lease’ aircraft for customers, from EC 135 helicopters to Boeing 737s and their associated equipment. We have also provided competitive costing for the creation of a small fleet of cargo aircraft, provided helicopter fire fighting equipment and sourced large aircraft simulators for international customers
The Rexor team readily admits to mixing business with pleasure and has its roots in a small airport in the United Kingdom. Sleap airfield is an ex Royal Air Force (RAF) Station in the county of Shropshire and is the base for Glen, Rexors Flight Ops Director. Glen has owned many vintage aircraft over the years, from a wood and cotton covered Tiger Moth biplane to a World War 2 British Army Auster. His latest acquisition is a 75 year old Italian Army Piper Cub aircraft; he is based at Sleap with his friends and other vintage aircraft who are locally known as the Vulture Squadron.
If a customer wishes to fly into Sleap, there is fuel, hangarage and basic handling facilities. There is a busy local flying school, a co-located restaurant and also opportunities to fly in some fabulous classic and vintage aircraft, such as the Avro Anson British light bomber and the Russian Yak 11 fighter.
We, at Rexor, hope the love of aviation will bring many people together, both suppliers and customers alike.
